Topic: "Treaties and Leadership"

The Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba welcome Dennis Meeches - Long Plain First Nation (Treaty No.1)

A respected First Nation leader from Long Plain First Nation in Manitoba (located in Treaty 1 territory), where he served as Chief for over 20 years. As the longest serving elected Chief in the community’s history, he guided the community through economic growth and innovation.

Under his leadership, the Nation became a trailblazer in urban reserve development, establishing successful ventures in both Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie. These initiatives not only created economic opportunities for Long Plain members but also set a national example for Indigenous-led urban development.

Meeches played a pivotal role in the historic redevelopment of the former Kapyong Barracks in Winnipeg, now known as Naawi-Oodena, the largest urban reserve in Canada, advocating for its conversion into an urban reserve for the Treaty 1 First Nations. His vision emphasized economic self-sufficiency, cultural revitalization, and intergovernmental collaboration. Beyond his political career, he has continued to champion Indigenous economic empowerment. Dennis currently serves as President of Tribal Councils Investment Group of Manitoba and chairs Indigeno Travel, a First Nations-owned travel management company. He also contributes his expertise as a board member of Economic Development Winnipeg, the Indigenous Leadership Development Institute, and serves on the Premiers Business and Jobs Council.

Session will be limited to 50 audience members.
