Have you ever thought about what it is like to be a bird in Saskatoon? What places would you want to spend time in, and what risks would you need to avoid?
Birds face numerous threats in cities, but the good news is that there’s a lot that we can do to make our cities more hospitable to birds! This panel webinar will discuss an initiative meant to do just that, called the Bird Friendly Cities certification program. Our speakers will also introduce you to the new Bird Friendly Saskatoon volunteer team working to implement this program in our city. Our first speaker, Jan Shadick of Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation, will discuss the challenges that urban areas present for birds and other wildlife based on her experience as a rehabilitator. Next, Mercy Harris will discuss how the Bird Friendly Cities program seeks to reduce these threats and enhance urban ecosystems, and share advocacy and education projects being undertaken by Bird Friendly Saskatoon volunteers. Finally, Angela Tremka, who was involved in having Regina become certified as a Bird Friendly City in 2022, will discuss what the certification looks like in practice. She will take you behind the scenes to share Bird Friendly Regina’s successes and explore why being a Bird Friendly City is an ongoing effort that benefits birds, people, and the spaces we share.
